Microsoft Word is a brilliant word processing app that has everything most people need to get things done from their device. It lets you do quite a bit of work with documents.
Getting Around 9/10
There is an area on the main screen that shows recent documents with which you've been working and a large empty space meant for newly created files. If your device has a small screen, everything will be organized in tabs with templates. The templates offer pre-created layouts with advanced formatting. You just need to fill in the blanks with text or media and tweak them to your liking.
The main controls are split between the top and the bottom of the screen. You can use zoom controls and tap anywhere to select an area that you want to delete or edit.
Free and Paid Functions 7/10
You can download and view Word documents for free, but if you want to create or edit files, you'll have to pay for a monthly subscription. Besides, Microsoft has some random bonuses for people with iPads smaller than 10 inches. If you happen to have one, you will be able to edit your documents for free. Other users need a subscription to access full functionality.
Microsoft Word offers a pleasant experience for users with a paid subscription. We can't recommend it for someone who often writes lengthy articles, but we can easily see how it can benefit people who want to create and edit Word files.
Sharing and Storing 9/10
If you sign in, you will get access to OneDrive. Moreover, you can connect a Google Drive or Dropbox account and access files you've stored in these services. Sharing is very easy, and you can control if the recipient can only view or edit files. You can share Word documents over Bluetooth, Android Beam or via email. Finally, you can print files using Google Cloud Print.
Compatibility 5/5
Microsoft Word is pre-installed on Windows Phone and is available for Android and iOS. However, you will have to pay for the whole Office package to get a full version of Word. You can also install Word on a certain number of PCs, depending on your subscription plan.
Summary
Microsoft Word offers robust features that most apps can't deliver. The design is simple and smart, with a layout that mimics Microsoft's PC apps. However, without a subscription you can't access the majority of its functions.
Pros:
- The most powerful word processor
- Integration with Dropbox
- Easy-to-use interface
- Gentle learning curve.
Cons:
- Can't edit two documents simultaneously
- Inconsistent keyboard shortcuts.
