Google Photos is an app that intelligently manages your photos. It's become increasingly popular for its automatic features and other tools that take care of your photo collection.
Layout Design 9/10
There are three big tabs on the main screen: Photos, Search and Library. The "Photos" tab, apart from the obvious, shows you different kinds of memories. These include last week's highlights, pictures of friends and siblings, and so on. You can also hide photos that belong to certain time periods.
And there's an interactive map in the "Search" tab. You can pinch and zoom on the map to search for photos from that area. You can turn this function off by disabling Location History on your phone. Finally, you will find your favorite photos, albums and archives in the "Library" tab.
Available Functions 7/10
Google says that their app is free and it's true, but there is a catch. There are several ways to back up your files: Original and High Quality Resolution. The second option gives you unlimited storage free of charge, but your videos must be 1080p or lower, and your photos must be 16 MP or less.
With the Original resolution option, you can backup files at their full resolution, but you only get 15 GB of free storage. If you need more space, you need to pay a monthly fee. Keep in mind that storage space is divided between Google Drive, Google Photos and Gmail.
In-App Navigation 9/10
Thanks to pinch gestures, you don't need to scroll to navigate through a huge photo collection. Images are ordered chronologically, and you can see photos grouped by year and month. Instead of tapping on every photo to share or delete it, you need to drag your finger around to select photos en masse. Selection gestures allow you to navigate through the app effortlessly.
Compatibility 5/5
Google Photos has its own website that you can use, as well as apps for iOS and Android devices. Since you back up your photos to the cloud service, you can access them from anywhere with any device. All you need is good Internet connection.
Summary
Unlike other apps, Google Photos makes the best of artificial intelligence. It can suggest which photos to share with whom and even engage in photo conversations. However, there is a 16-megapixel limit on image resolution that shouldn't be forgotten.
Pros:
- Automatic synchronization from any device
- Find photos by content/object
- Built-in face recognition
- Creates movies with your photos.
Cons:
- No video editing
- Doesn't save any tags.
