Google Home is an app that serves as the main hub for Chromecast and devices that support Chromecast. It does many interesting things, such as Google Assistant customization and finding apps for Chromecast.
User Interface 5/5
Google Home has a simple and clean design. Instead of traditional tabs you have two big sections. The Home section shows shortcuts for calling Home, turning off lights, starting routines, and so on. The second section has a Media button with all active video and audio divided into cards. Each card features song/video details and a stop button. You can also change volume and sync audio with other smart devices.
Underneath the sections are all Assistant devices and a Nest WiFi system. The buttons automatically change based on what Smart Home devices you have.
Functions and Features 5/5
Google has tried to mimic the dashboard experience you'd have with a streaming app. You can quickly search and move media between TVs and speakers. It does a good job with services like Netflix and YouTube, but can't interact with other apps launched by sports networks and cable channels.
One thing that Google Home does better than others is highlighting important events in your home. It can show suggestions such as creating a WiFi network for your guests. You can also find "Home History" in Settings. It lets you browse previous events by alert or device.
Voice Commands 5/5
You can always give a voice command to any smart speaker or to your phone to control other devices. The app gives you more options for easy ways to get your home to do what you need. This feature comes in handy when you want to quickly control many devices. Google Home allows you to organize all devices into different homes, just in case you want to separate your house from your office.
Compatibility 4/5
Google Home is available on Android devices, iPhone and iPad. Basically, any smartphone that is connected to your home WiFi network will work. Consider agreeing to turn on location permissions, as it's easier for the app to report proper weather and notify you of local events.
Summary
Google Home manages to offer lots of features while being well-organized. It lets you control all connected devices and home products like thermostats and lights. There are still occasional bugs and glitches, but Google often updates its app.
